Just as described. Amazing book.
I found this hard to determine if they are really short stories or snippets from larger novels. I also think it could be more real - everyone knows Los Angeles offers daily horrific events. No need to make them up. Easy read and doesn't require much thought. Good book to travel with.
It's just about what I was expecting--a collection of stories ranging from the good ("The Golden Gopher," "Kinship," "The Kidnapper Bell") to the horrible ("Mulholland Drive," "Midnight in Silicon Valley," "Number 19," "Once More, Lazarus"). Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good, as is always a risk with these multiple-author anthologies.
The definitively bad line is from "Midnight in Silicon Valley," where we are informed that the main character was wooing big companies "like Intel and Pentium." That's just careless writing and poor editorial control, and takes you right out of the story.
I like the short stories. My husband and I can read it and not concern ourselves with losing the other's place.
The map inside the front matter pinpointing each short story's location was an added value. it was especially helpful to non-Angeleno readers, but the A-List authors was what sold me on this one of the best in the Noir Anthology series.
