Oh, I can sympathize! I don’t care how dearly you love children; there are just times that they try your patience. Habberton did such an excellent job of capturing that over the top frustration, and the equally over the top devotion they inspire.
It’s also funny in a totally realistic way. The boys, ages 5 and 3, manage to turn everything their well-meaning, but child – clueless uncle tries on its head. For example, he lets them loose on some old magazines to cut pictures from and glue into a scrapbook. Who can see what’s coming? Not Uncle, so the repapering of the best room in the house comes as a shock to him. Then they really get busy. They start repeating private conversations. That was fun.
It’s a very sweet love story and not in the least bit sappy. If you’re looking for a quick fun read, this would be a perfect book for you.

Helen Babies edition by John Habberton Reference eBooks Reviews

It was a joy to re-read Helen's Babies. My Mother read this to us for years and my sister and I both read it on our own. She enjoyed her copy also. We won't let this book get away from us again!
Thanks!
My mom used to read this to me when I was little. While times have changed since Helen's Babies has been written its still a charming book.
Loved the book! A great read! Was very pleased with the condition of the book and the price. Definitely a treasure in my personal library.
Worth a look for an insider's view to the state of bachelor/nephew relations amongst the New York society set. That I can't remember the exact time frame speaks to the light weight of this short work. It's easy to read, full of style, speech and lifestyle details and won't demand much of you. Enjoyable, but not essential.
What a joy! Sweet, old-fashioned...I don't know how many times I have read this book.
I found this book originally in a trunk of antique books. I read it until I had practically memorized it. It's a gentle story of a single man who is roped into caring for two very young & mischievous children for 2 weeks, while their parents go off visiting (parental care was very different in the late 19th century). How his adventures with the children, and his meeting and attempted wooing of a lovely neighbor lady, make up this story.
The title put me off at first when I was a teen-age boy. But it was recommended by my father, and so I gave it a try. It turned out to be one of the best comedic novels I have ever read. I have read a couple of times since then, always with sheer delight.

The setting is in the decades following the Civil War, and so also gives some hints about the manners and customs of its time that help put our own twenty-first century milieu in perspective.

I'm sure you will feel that your time spent with the characters of Budge and Toddie will reward you in ways you can't anticipate.
